So, as many of you know, Kathryn's Lab is moving from Harvard Longwood to
Georgetown, DC. This leaves an opening to live at The Hidden Gem, at 88
Thorndike Street in Arlington -- it's steps to the 77 bus in one direction,
same steps to the Minuteman Bike Path in the other, and just a few more
steps to the Alewife Redline Station in the same direction.
The room available appears to be the master bedroom, is rather square, has
plenty of room for bed, dresser, vanity, etc. It's definitely got the
better closet of the two bedrooms.
Kitchen isn't what I grew up with in the 'burbs, but is quite functional.
Big living room / dining room, with additional room used as a study. Two
porches. We currently use the small sunroom between the study and the
front porch as the cat's room (litterbox).
There is some basement storage space; but right now it's being taken up
mostly by my stuff. I can consider getting outside storage if it's necessary.
Two car tandem parking (one inside garage, one outside), that doesn't
interfere with the landlady's parking arrangements. Currently, garage is
taken up with the housemate's kayak, our bicycles, and some of her
things. I don't own a car.
Landlady is very responsive, has one dog and occasionally pet-sits
another. This is her family's home for 3 generations; she does want it
taken care of, and she does have some common-sense rules (no open flame
grills on porches, don't break the walls / windows, store flammables in the
garage, etc) and some rules I find to be silly but easy to comply with (for
the dishwasher, use cascade with lemon brand dishwasher gel).
The Housemate's share of the rent is $725; utilities vary, but the
apartment is on a budget system for the gas heat at $84 / month; and
electric has been running at about $100 / month -- but that's with the
Housemate leaving 2 computers on 24/7. Quoted utility figures are whole
bill amounts, not shares.
There is cable modem and some cable TV in the house. The amounts for this
are negotiable, but won't be less than half the retail cost of cable modem
alone (approximately half of $56 and any applicable fees). RCN provides
the service. There is currently no landline telephone in the apartment; I
got a cellphone when I moved in. A landline is negotiable.
Landlady provides a pay-washer and non-pay dryer in the basement. On our
utilities, of course. $1.00 / wash load. Good sized washer; I haven't
imbalanced it yet . . . .
Lease will allow two cats that are fixed / spayed / neutered; The Hidden
Gem is very cat-friendly I come with a Red Dot Generator.
I'm looking for someone sane, responsible with money and property, and
affable to share living expenses.
If this sounds like you, or someone you know, please get in touch with me.
Thanks for reading,
Merv
