I understand where Colette is coming from on this position, as Katsucon does
have a large "under-age" crowd. Their rules need to be spelled out, for the
convention's protection. Arisia on the other hand... I do not see the need
to push for "real" names, in the program book or on the name badges. If we
started getting a lot of dropped off kids... then I'd change my mind. Merv
and Phi, will that name be on your headstone too?

Jumping in from left field on this, as a Vice Chair (going up to Chair) of a
larger event, it is generally preferable to have real names on badges, as it
is easier for attendees to identify the staff they need to deal with and
compliment/give feedback on a staffer. Katsucon has over 300 staffers, and to
have nicknames is just not feasible.

Merv, while your nickname is generally recognized, you are the exception to
the norm. I might recognize a few other nicknames on staff, but the rule has
to be one way or the other, making a recognizibility test would break things
terribly. Perhaps see if you can do Tom "Merv" Murphy since this
apparently means so much to you, but the real name should be used.

Well, I'd prefer to be listed as I'm known. We could fight over this and
end up doing it my way, or we can be sensible, and do it my way.

Allowing for the bare possibility of compromise, what is whose preference
for "real names"? Why is this an issue this year, when it hasn't been an issue
at all in past years? What's up?

Merv
