Thank you, Jude, for clarifying what my intention is from my first post in
this subject. THAT IS, I do not want ANYONE turned away from a meal in the
Staff Den who has done a real job for the convention.
I'd like to be able to send people from Volunteers Lounge who have worked a
number of hours, sent by someone in charge (in this case me) who KNOWS they
deserve Staff Den privileges and not turned away because they don't have the
right ribbon. I'm concerned that the statement from Joel did not take into
account Volunteers who man the Volunteer Lounge (nee: Gopher Hole) and are
first timers, but who put in many hours. I'm not comparing apples to oranges,
I'm comparing apples to apples. Why can one group of apples go to the Staff
Den and not another?
My other concern was the person or persons who because they only work a
couple hours and get a what's considered a 'staff den access' ribbon and are fed
all weekend, AND their department head let's them take advantage of that
system. I think we all know who those people are, and we surely have the people
with balls enough to tell them just because you did a couple hours for me
(i.e. department head) doesn't mean wer'e going to feed you all weekend.
ALL Volunteers should be treated as equally as possible.

I think this and a number of other emails may miss the point of the
original post. My take was not that the poster was saying it is wrong
for masquerade and art show ribbons to get into the Staff Den, but
rather asking why working on those areas in any capacity gets special
treatment over generic gophers. If I've arranged ahead to work the art
show or masquerade, I can get my ribbon, work my N hours, and use the
Staff Den, but if instead I happen to be helping out logistics for those
same N hours and get a gopher ribbon, I only get the snacks at the
gopher hole.
(I know I've received a masquerade staff ribbon in the past even when I
was only working a couple of hours for the masquerade. I had green
room access anyway, so it wasn't an issue for me, but I do get that
aspect of the poster's gripe, too.)
Anyway I think the point was that people who deserve to be fed aren't
being fed.
Note to Crystal: I am *not* suggesting any changes be made, especially
for this year! I think it is a useful discussion to have post-con,
especially if relevant data can be collected for analysis.
See you tomorrow,
-jude
