Hi everyone,
Thank you Collette for coming forth and taking responsibility for
this incident.
I've known Collette for a very long time and I'm convinced she did
not mean any harm. I personally don't think she should be removed
from Staff. Just the fact that she took responsibility for it shows
her character.
Right now I think the most important thing we can do is for Arisia to
make an official apology to this person and to any other person that
has been assaulted by the "Hygiene Ninja". Also, I think that someone
should email Kris and maybe even put an official apology on the
Webpage if the Con Senior Staff and/ or Corporation sees fit to do that.
From this point on, since we now know what happened, I think this
discussion should be moved to the Corporate list, or at the very
least The Corporate list should be included in the discussions.
I also want to thank Kris for bringing this to the Con's attention.
I think Kris has said best as how I feel being a former social
outcast so I won't get into that.
Walter

Just to clear the air: this did happen, and the person on Ops staff
who "sicced" the hygiene ninja on the volunteer in question (assuming
we are talking about the same person, which I imagine we are) was me.
It was meant as a gentle way to get a serious point across. The
timing ended up a little off (from my recollection, it ended up
happening in Operations), but I did not mean harm, and talked with
the volunteer at about the time they were approached by the ninja and
ensured that they understood the intention, and to also be sure they
were being given the chance to relax and get a chance to shower/etc.
The volunteer in question said he had showered and was completely
conscious of the issue, and mentioned that it was a particular piece
of outerwear he was wearing that he wears during work and "can't get
the smell out of it." He removed said article of clothing later and
all was fine.
I know why I did it, I know that I meant no harm, and I believe that
the staffer did not take any lasting insult from the incident. I am
very sorry that my action offended others and has caused people to
look down upon the "hygiene ninja" (which in my mind has generally
been a gentle and humorous reminder that in a hotel packed full of
people, this issue is more important than usual).
I leave it to the powers that be to decide whether this action
necessitates my removal from staff, but I certainly felt I should let
folks know that this incident did happen, though with not the malice
assumed in the original complaint.

I have replied to it as well, and as long as we're keeping this going,
here's my reply.
I am not speaking in any official capacity, as this year I was not even
a div head. But as someone fairly involved in concom activities, I have
never ever heard that ops endorses or 'sics' the hygiene ninja on
anyone.
I have seen this character once or twice, and in fact mediated an
encounter where someone was offended by the targeting. Said ninja, and
several other staff members assured the jest was random, and was not
targeting specific people.
I have no capacity to apologize on anyones behalf, but I will say that
it is MY impression you may be misinformed as to the circumstances
surrounding this encounter.
