My opinion:
(and I have one)
But first pose questions for pondering in your thoughts. No need to
answer them right now..:
Can you get panels to run past 3 on Sunday?
Can you get respected professionals/knowledgeable speakers to stay
longer on Sunday for panels?
What could be done in a "relaxcon" kind of way to enliven the third
night of Arisia that would not load the burden on the existing staff?
How do we plan a 4th day that has very little programming?
Now on to my opinion but after a short observation:
One of the things that struck me as ugly (and that is the word I really
do want here) on Sunday early evening was the amount of work needed to
be done. This year I was unable to even lift a finger to help. So as I
waited out my time watching. since I've had Aileen I have not really
done a real loadout. But for years beforehand I did. Now for the
ugliest. I saw a man who I know has never has lifted a finger to help
Arisia. He was waiting for the dead dog to start. Somewhere along the
way the idea of why the dead dog was held was lost. When I got to the
dead dog with Tamar (she needed to check the room set before we left. I
needed some sugar.) I saw this man in the room. He seemed totally
unaware of the tired people who were sitting there in between their
loads. At that moment I realized that going to a 4th day would be hard
on those were so weary but still working. That moving the dead dog to
Monday would also cheat some of those people who worked so hard and
could not stay another day. That people who leach off us will continue
to do so. That the people who truly add life to Arisia with their
attendance, the pros and the con attendees, will take several years
before they can re-aline their private lives to make another day worth
doing.
Now really the opinion.
Arguing here, on both lists, without looking at Tem's expansion plan is
arguing in a vacuum.
Tem, please give us your plans for stretching the con into a 4th day?
