One hard science / space travel / engineer geek fan responding.
I truly wish we could get a presentation from the guy who lead the team who
created the tiolets on the Space Station. Dr. Rathke, but he goes by the
name of Dr. Flush! Ok so that is not always hard science, but as one who
'gave a bit' of herself for the space program. (Show up early to the
July meeting, I'll tell you about it)
Can teraforming work? Many sf stories create wonderful places to live on
the worst planets via teraforming. Our earth based teraformers - The Army
Core of Engineers do not have a very good history of reforming the earth to
create livable places. Be it the massive disasters in New Orleans, or their
attempts to tame the tiniest river, and drain a swamp, we have failed.
Why do we still think we can change other planets, and make them habitual,
when we can not here. Just what is teraforming, who does it and how can we
do it better. Or should we stop, since doing so has damaged our planet.
Ladies you do not deal will with suction: (ok so this is a Dr. Flush joke
- I will explain it at the July meeting) So many stories today have main
characters 'doing it' in space. They eat, they sleep, they sleep around.
How do they deposit wastes? In the early days, and recently in Dallas,
astronauts wore diapers, what do we do about longer voyages? Once we figure
out how to, then what do we do? Pack in pack out? Use and re use? Blue
ice?
Ergonomics for geeks. - Yes you can set up your home computer to prevent
carpel tunnel. Eye strain and neck pain are not the price you pay for WOW.
Your mom was wrong, don't put your feet on the floor! Reviewing the
new/unused Ergonomic standard and seeing how we can design our home
workspaces, and those darn computers in space.
On the pirate theme. I wonder if we could bring an old drinking buddy and
sea shanty singer up from Connecticut for the weekend. We can sell tickets
to see me falling down drunk.
