As a lit theory geek who also runs a reading group in which this subject
came up recently (the author in question was Rudyard Kipling and his
attitudes toward colonialism in _Kim_), I find this question really
fascinating and would be very interested in hearing a panel on the subject.
I think there are many complex questions which intersect with the subject,
including whether the reader feels the author's political opinions manifest
or intrude into the story, the age/sophistication of the reader, and the
reader's own feelings about maintaining a separation between art and
politics.
