As I recall, open gaming at the Park Plaza was in a larger space most
years--off the Mezz.--and there were lots of areas where games
appropriate to younger kids had been set out. This probably built a
culture of grown-ups gaming at tables, while their youngsters played
nearby. This does not work as well in a smaller, more tightly packed
room.

One possibility would be to encourage gamers to play not only in the
open gaming room, but set up a "gaming slug line" for games to be
arranged in open gaming for play in guest rooms or sitting areas in
the hotel. You meet up in the gaming room, but once you find your
players you retire to a child-free area of mutual consent.
