One thing to add to the list as a pre-req for 3 below:

I believe dkaps message captured the overall summary.  

However one can'o'worms that we opened without resolving is that we
might want a database that supports triggers.  If this proves to be
the case, running in postgress rather than mysql may become necessary.
 I'm going to ask that Hacksaw and/or Jack speak up as regarding this
as both of you seemed to grasp the trade-offs (and you spoke more
conherently than I on the subject).
