Arisia is the largest and most diverse volunteer-run science fiction convention in New England. Deep in its roots is the celebration of the creative minds that hatch stories in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Stories that drive our fandom, inspire our artists, and spread into other media such as film and gaming. At the heart of Arisia is the story.
To further the aims of Arisia in appreciating science fiction and fantasy, and inspire and grow its fandom, Arisia believes that it is essential to motivate the next generation of writers in New England. The Student Writing Contest is an important part of this mission: to support and celebrate the story. And in so doing, celebrate the creation of new worlds and characters for us all to explore.
Submissions to the annual Student Writing Short Story Contest are accepted by the December 1 deadline, and all stories are read and scored by the Student Writing Committee. Every year, finalists are chosen, and placement is decided by celebrity judges—including notable sci-f/fantasy authors, and experienced editors.
Prizes are awarded to exceptional stories, including cash prizes that total $1,000, and free memberships to attend the Arisia convention. The school attended by our first-prize winner also receives a matching prize, up to
$250. Prizes are awarded at our annual Arisia convention on Sunday evening during the Arisia Masquerade.
